First Native RCMP Troop Graduates
"This is the first time in the history of the R.C.M.P. that a troop of Native Special Constables will graduate to Constable Status, said Corporal Roch Garneau, of the R.C.M.P. As regular members of the force, the constable will now be eligible for promotion based on merit and qualifications. "Any ambitions are open to them," said Garneau "all the way to commissioner rank."

Creek Renamed In Honour Of Late Senator

SASKATOON (August 27, 1993). Family and friends of the late Senator Hillard McNab C.M. gathered at Wanuskewin Heritage Park near Saskatoon for a ceremony to officially rename the creek which flows through the park into the South Saskatchewan River. The creek, formerly known as Tipperary Creek, now bears the name Opimihaw Creek, after the Cree name of the late Senator who was instrumental in the Park's development. The name means "one who flies above."

Broken Wing Singers" Recording 'First' In Canada
It has never been done before. But now Canada has its first recording of a powwow group in a penitentiary. About a year ago the Broken Wing singers (from the Prince Albert Penitentiary) had a group who had been singing together for a while. All of the men involved were going through the healing process and they wanted to put out a positive message that young people should not do the things that would send them to the 'pen'.

Peter Ballantyne Band To Build Office Complex In P.A.
The Peter Ballantyne band has unveiled plans to begin construction of a new office complex on band property in the city of Prince Albert. On April 12th, the band announced construction of a two-storey, 2,137 square-meter (23,000 square-foot) building will begin May 1.

School To Work Program
The School to Work (STW) program is a four-year pilot program initiated by the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (FSIN) Office of Education that is now beginning its third year of operation. The program was started as a means of addressing high school completion rates, post-secondary continuation rates and labour force participation rates of First Nations students.
