Canada will soon have its first bank with First Nations involvement and ownership. The First Nations Bank of Canada has cleared the initial approval stages and has received its letter of patent from the Canadian Deposit Insurance Corporation (CDIC). Following the licence to commence business, also from CDIC, in December, the First Nations Bank of Canada will be legally ready for clients.

Gaming Jurisdiction
At the same time of the signing of the 2002 Gaming Framework Agreement, Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority (SIGA) entered into a new Casino Operating Agreement and the Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Licensing (SIGL) entered into a new gaming regulatory agreement with Saskatchewan Liquor & Gaming Authority. The regulatory agreement is designed to build regulatory capacity for SIGL, which will better prepare it to regulate all forms of gaming functions for First Nations in the future under First Nations jurisdiction.

White Bear Land Claim Settlement
The White Bear land claims agreement has finally been signed. A joint announcement was made on February 12th by Chief Brian Standingready and the Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, David Crombie. This is the first substantial claims settlement in the province. It is a significant step towards the restoration of the full land base promised us under treaty.
